Public Speaking

At Morisset Public School we are encouraging a stronger culture of public speaking to increase confidence in our students’ ability to form and deliver an opinion, passionately advocate for a cause they believe in and to inform others through motivation. Public speaking helps to develop the ability of our students as they prepare for school leadership in their senior years.

Over the coming weeks students have the opportunity to write and deliver a speech at school, which can lead to the opportunity to compete at the Lake Macquarie West Public Speaking Competition. Teacher support will be given to students when required to assist with the creation and delivery of speeches. This activity is not mandatory, however all students in Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 are encouraged to participate.

Speeches will be due in Term 3, Week 3 (Monday August 4, 2025) and will be delivered in class during this week.

This public speaking task involves students writing and presenting a creative and original speech on a topic of their choice which has a clear message or purpose and inspires the audience to think or act. This speech should be both entertaining and persuasive.

Three students from each class will be selected to participate in the Whole School Speak Off Final on Friday August 22, 2025 (Term 3, Week 5), where they will be invited to present the same in class speech to the whole school and community. The top two students from each Stage will be awarded with Excellence in Public Speaking and have the opportunity to represent the school at the Lake Macquarie West Zone Public Speaking Competition to be held early September, 2025.

Rubrics for consideration will be sent home with students so they can be certain their speech meets the expected criteria for the Lake Macquarie West Zone Public Speaking Competition. As a guide, speeches should go for a length of 1-2 minutes for Stage 1, 2 - 3 minutes for Stage 2 and 3 - 3 ½ minutes for Stage 3. Students are encouraged to use palm cards to deliver their speech, eye contact and project their voice.

Thank you for encouraging your child to prepare for their upcoming speech. Please contact the school if you require further information or wish to discuss.
